Ramakrishna
Nagar, a small hamlet, situated in the hilly terrains of the
remote corner of the north eastern part of India, district
Karimganj, Assam bordering Bangladesh, practically came into
existence with the independence of India in 1947, when a
number of migrants flocked from erstwhile East Pakistan,( now
Bangladesh) and took shelter in this remote, inaccessible area
of dense forests and un inhabited land.
the
task of settlement in an alien land was an uphill one and the
migrants had to toil strenuously for their livelihood. As a
result economic growth and development of this area was a slow
and gradual and hence the rate of progression remained almost
stagnant down the decades.
Although
Ramkrishna Nagar falls under the jurisdiction of LA-1 Ratabari
(Reserved) and HP-1 Karimganj (Reserved) constituency, the
demographic structure of the society comprises of 2.5 lack of
people belonging to SC-ST-OBC-MOBC, EX-TGL, and minority
Community, living below the poverty line with agriculture and
fishing as their vital source of livelihood.
Ramkrishna
Nagar College came into being on
12th
January 1964. Initiative was
taken by late Baidya Nath Mukherjee, former Health minister of
Assam and other members of the steering committee formed for
this purpose. With untiring efforts, dedication and zeal of
the members and active cooperation and support from all
segments of the society. The first Principal (Founder
Principal) was Sisir Ranjan Sastri; a renowned scholar of the
state. R.K. Nagar College is now a full-fledged college having
Science and Arts Stream up to Degree level course with
elective subjects. The Governing Body has prepared a Master
Plan for the over all development of the college campus step

The

being pioneered by late Suranjan Nandi, former Minister, Govt.
of Assam.

01-12.2005.
Over
the past four decades, Ramkrishnanagar College has reflected
the pluralistic composition of this colourful region as an
exemplifier of the concept of unity in diversity. It has also
symbolized a multi-racial human garden where so many flowers
of variegated colours bloom, flourish and spread their
fragrance in the world outside. Noticeable is the fact that a
considerable part of the Alumni is holding various dignified
posts all over India and Abroad.
The untiring efforts of the
present management has accounted for all these diametrical
changes, and today the college is making headway towards
greater prosperity. The continuous supporting hand of the
present President of the Governing Body, a distinguished
member of Assam Cabinet Sri Gautam Roy has helped the college
to tide over every crisis.
